Dry onion soup mix: The magic “ingredient.”
I’ll be honest, I have never used dry onion soup mix for its original purpose…to make onion soup, but I have used it many times as a main ingredient in my recipes. I love to use packets of dry onion soup mix because it adds so much great flavor without the need to measure out lots of different seasonings.
The brand I always use is Lipton Recipe Secrets Onion Soup and Dip Mix, but I am fairly confident that you could use any brand and have similar results. You can find this mix in your grocery store’s soup aisle, or you can purchase it on Amazon here. {affiliate link}
Air fryer or stove top Onion Chicken and Potatoes.
The second time I made this recipe, I tried cooking it in my air fryer, thinking it would make the potatoes brown a little more on the outside.
My conclusion: these ingredients taste delicious cooked together no matter where you cook them.
Using the air fryer didn’t turn out exactly as I had hoped. The chicken was over-cooked, and the potatoes were under-cooked when I tried to cook everything together all at once. Having said that, here is what I would recommend for anyone wanting to give the air fryer a try:
- You may want to try halving the recipe or doing this in two batches.
- Toss the potatoes with 1 tablespoon oil and cook in an air fryer set to 400°F for 10 minutes first.
- Then, toss the chicken and onion in 1 tablespoon oil along with the dry onion soup mix. Add the coated chicken and onions to the air fryer basket with the potatoes, and mix it all together. Cook for 10 more minutes at 400°F, or until the chicken is fully cooked, mixing everything again halfway through.
Following the instructions above should work just fine, but you may want to adjust the cooking times according to how you like your potatoes cooked. I still think the easiest (and most fool-proof) way to cook this recipe is on the stove-top, so I am giving the ingredients and instructions for making this “Onion Chicken and Potatoes” recipe on the stove-top…
