I kind of struggled to know what to name this recipe. To be honest, I just kept on adding ingredients as I went along and changed the name multiple times as I added/took away ingredients.
In the end, what I thought was going to be a “grinder” sandwich made more sense as a pizza, and because some of the ingredients were inspired by an Italian sub, I decided to just call it an “Italian Sub Pizza.” I also debated calling it, “All my favorite things pizza,” but then no one would have any idea what that meant so, you know, I didn’t.
What’s on an “Italian Sub Pizza”?
Pizza crust is topped with a special mayonnaise/Ranch sauce, an Italian seasoned cheese blend, ham, pepperoni, spaghetti sauce, and sweet marinated red onion.
There are some optional ingredients in this recipe. I decided to pack all of the stuff I love into this pizza, but I realize some of my tastes are unique. If you are not a fan of these ingredients, you can leave them out and still have a great pizza.
Optional ingredients.
Pistachios.
Do you eat pistachios? The green color threw me off for years, so I never tried them. But a few weeks ago, I decided to try one, and I LOVED it. Since then, I have been snacking on them here and there. I had them on the counter as I was making this pizza, and I thought it might be fun to chop them up and add them to the pizza to give it an extra crunch and flavor. Pistachios are optional.
Marinated red onion.
Have you ever had red onion that was marinated in a vinaigrette? The first time I ever had anything like it was on the Greek salad at Panera Bread. It’s fantastic, and I love it on an Italian sub, so I decided to top the pizza with it. I decided to marinate my onions in red wine vinegar with a little brown sugar. I just let the red onions sit in a small bowl in the vinaigrette on the kitchen counter as I cooked the rest of the pizza. Then, when the pizza was cooked, I drained them, and topped the pizza with them. These red onions are optional.
Sliced ham with pepperoni.
Classic Italian subs always have more than one kind of meat. In this pizza, I sliced some deli ham into thin strips and combined it with mini pepperoni. One, or both, of these meats can be optional. You could also play around with adding more, or less, of each ingredient if you like.
Change it up.
Feel free to add other ingredients you would normally enjoy on an Italian sub. Some other foods that would work well on this pizza are:
- green bell peppers, sliced or diced
- diced tomatoes
- shredded lettuce
- sliced salami
- sliced banana peppers
- black or Greek olives
- fresh basil
Bonus: More recipes with 2-ingredient dough.
I decided to make the pizza crust out of the the popular 2-ingredient dough.
