Pan-Seared Steak with Red Wine Sauce

There is something about biting into a juicy steak that feels indulgent, isn’t there? Save this Pan Seared Steak with Red Wine Sauce recipe for a night when you feel like treating yourself! You’ll be so glad you did!

The rich flavor of steak pairs perfectly with the red cooking wine-based sauce in today’s recipe.

How long should I cook my steak on the grill?

Knowing with certainty that you have thoroughly cooked your steak without actually cutting into it can be tricky. With most meat, it’s either cooked or not cooked, but steak is different. It’s not so black and white. It’s brown and pink…and cooked “according to your desired doneness.”

I found the image above on grillgrate.com, and it can serve as a guide if you are not sure how long to cook your steak and what the thermometer should read. They sell this image as a magnet that you can keep on your refrigerator. Learn more here.

Depending on the thickness of the cut of steak you are using and how well you like it cooked, it’s possible you will want to grill your steaks anywhere between 2-13 minutes per side. In this recipe, I am assuming you are using a cut of steak that is between 1/2 to 1-inch thick. If that is the case, chances are good you will want to grill the steak 4-6 minutes on each side.

Sides to consider.

We enjoyed our steak with mashed potatoes and green beans on the side. Other sides that would go great with this recipe include:

  • Baked potato
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Zucchini and/or squash sauteed in butter and sprinkled with salt
  • Carrots sprinkled with lemon juice, sauteed in butter, and sprinkled with salt
  • Mushrooms cooked in the same skillet used in the recipe
  • Corn on the cob
  • Asparagus

Another great steak recipe that can be made in the slow cooker!

Do you know what really makes steak tender? A slow cooker! The Slow Cooker Beef Tips and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes pictured below is a huge hit in our house. It tastes delicious! Plus, the beef tips are a cinch to make because the slow cooker does all of the hard work.

Beef Tips with gravy over mashed potatoes are delicious!

Alright, let’s get to why you came here… I hope you enjoy every bite of your delicious steak dinner!

Here is what you need:

4 (4 ounce each) lean beef strip sirloin steaks
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tablespoon light butter
1 shallot, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon flour
2/3 cup red cooking wine
1/2 cup fat free beef broth

Here is what you do:

Set a skillet over medium high heat. Sprinkle steak with salt and pepper and rub with the oil.

Cook the steak in the preheated skillet for 4-6 minutes on both sides, or until the meat reaches desired doneness. (For medium rare, thermometer should reach 135°F; medium, 145°F; and well done, 160°F.) Transfer steak to a plate or bowl and set aside.

In the same skillet, melt butter. Cook shallots and garlic in the butter until the shallots are tender, approximately 2-3 minutes. Mix flour in with the shallots.

Whisk in the cooking wine with the shallot mixture. Bring to a boil; cook 2 minutes. Mix broth in with the wine mixture and cook 2-3 more minutes.

Serve 1/4 cup red wine sauce over each steak.

Makes 4 servings.
