Everyday Grain-Free Cookbook Review

August 25, 2015 by Sarah Anne Leave a Comment

I LOVE cookbooks. I love looking through them. I love learning new techniques for cooking. I love new recipe ideas. I love drooling over the pictures.

One of my favorite things to do is sit at Barnes and Noble with a stack of cookbooks, a black coffee and sift through the pages of cookbook after cookbook.

Lately I have been trying to eat more grain and sugar free. I don’t do this 100% nor am I a perfectionist about my eating (except with gluten and soy, of course!). I do find, however, that when I eat a more low carb/low glycemic diet that I feel better overall.  I have lost a lot of weight, my blood sugar has become more stable, my energy is better and I feel full longer. If you have been gluten free for awhile (more than 6 months) and still aren’t feeling as great as you could, I really encourage you to look into a ketogenic or low carb diet. Start by reading Wheat Belly or Grain Brain.

It will rock your world.

I am still searching for new recipes that fit the grain free bill. In the past few months I have run across a blog by Kelly Smith over at The Nourishing Home.

Kelly does an amazing job creating grain free meals as well as baked goods.

After drooling over her cookbook on amazon I decided to email her and ask if she would send me a copy in exchange for my review of it on my blog. She said yes!

I dropped everything the minute I got the cookbook, everyday grain-free baking in the mailbox.

For some of you, grain free may be a new concept. After all, aren’t there some grains that are gluten free? If you take those grains out… what is left to bake with?

Well, my friends… let me introduce you to Ms.  Coconut and Mr. Almond flour.

These are the two staple flours that Kelly uses in her cookbook.

You guys… I highly recommend this cookbook.

Here are a couple of the recipes that I have tried:

Blender waffles makingBlender Waffles

Easy Blender Waffles

Notice my one waffle… my kids (who are not gluten free) loved them and left this momma with only one. Next time I will double the recipe. My kids said they were their favorite waffles and this is saying a lot!

Peach Cobbler Breakfast BarsPC Breakfast Bars

 Peach Cobbler Breakfast Bars

These were such a treat. This was such a simple recipe. Once again, my kids LOVED them. I also passed along half of the pan to my aunt who follows more of a SCD diet. Yumm-o!

I have also tried the very vanilla cupcakes and morning glory muffins. I made both of these and shared with my neighbors who are not gluten free either. They all were very impressed and said they couldn’t tell they were gluten free.

Yes… I have been busy, but this cookbook with it’s beautiful photos and super easy recipes makes me want to spend time in the kitchen baking and not just for me… but for my whole family to enjoy.

There are some really yummy looking fall recipes in this book that I cannot wait to try out.  Don’t be left panicking about what fall treat you are taking to the next potluck.
