Benihana Restaurant Copy cat recipe: Hibachi Steak and Fried Rice

May 28, 2015 by Alisha Hughes

Of all the recipes I am sharing this week this recipe is my favorite! I think I went to Benihana once… a LONG time ago… so long ago that I don’t remember what we ate or how it tasted, but this recipe reminded me how I really liked Benihana! I have made fried rice before, but it was never this good. I also was impressed with how good the marinade made the steak taste. If you are not a fan of steak the marinade can be used on chicken, shrimp, or scallops.

Here’s today’s recipe:

benihana steak and fried rice

Here’s what you need to make the fried rice:
5 Tbsp. butter
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrots
2/3 cup chopped green onions
3 tsp. sesame seeds
5 eggs
1 cup cooked rice
5 Tbsp. soy sauce
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste

Here’s how you make the fried rice:

1. Melt butter in a large skillet. Add onions, carrots, and green onions. Saute for 2-3 minutes until carrots are translucent. Set aside.

2. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place sesame seeds in a shallow pan. Bake 10-15 minutes, shaking pan occasionally, until golden brown.
3. Lightly grease another skillet and scramble the eggs.

4. Combine rice, vegetables, sesame seeds and eggs. Add soy sauce, stir, and salt and pepper to taste.

Here’s what you need for the meat marinade:
1 Tbsp. grated apple
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
1 Tbsp. grated garlic
1 Tbsp. sesame oil
1 Tbsp. sesame seeds
3/4 pounds thin-sliced boneless beef top sirloin steak
(could also use 3/4 pound shrimp, chicken, or scallops in place of the steak)

Here’s how you make the marinade:

First of all, grating the apple. I am not exactly sure what they had in mind here, but I took out my handy little zester thing and used it to dig our little pieces of apple.

1. Mix all the marinade ingredients in a small bowl.
2. Marinate meat in the sauce for 30 minutes, or longer.
3. Heat a frying pan or flat grill on high heat.
4. Stir-fry the meat a few minutes until desired doneness. (is doneness a word?)IMG_1446
