Monte Cristo Sandwiches

June 24, 2017 by Alisha Hughes 2 Comments

Monte Cristo Sandwiches

As I tried to brainstorm some different lunch ideas that I could whip up quick for my kids this summer I thought of Sarah’s Monte Cristo sandwiches that she made back in 2010.

Have you ever made Monte Cristo sandwiches before? They have a unique taste to them, because they combine lots of different flavors that aren’t usually eaten together. It’s sort of like if a turkey and cheese sandwich decided it wanted to be french toast and then decided to dunk itself into some raspberry preserves. All of these fun flavors come together to make what we call the Monte Cristo sandwich. If you have never tried them before, now would be a great time to try them! 🙂

Smart Points for raspberry preserves.

Every good Monte Cristo sandwich is served with raspberry preserves on the side that you can dip the sandwich into. If you prefer not to dip the sandwiches, you could spread the preserves inside the sandwich before you cook the sandwiches. Either way, the sweetness of jam or preserves makes these sandwiches super tasty.

When figuring the smart points and nutrition facts for this recipe, I used traditional raspberry preserves. If you are looking for ways to bring down the smart points you could use sugar-free preserves or leave out the preserves altogether. By leaving out the preserves or by switching out traditional raspberry preserves for the Smucker’s sugar-free Raspberry preserves you can knock one smart point off of each sandwich, making them 7 WW FreeStyle SP per sandwich.

A Monte Cristo Sandwich for one person.

I really have been enjoying reading all of your responses on the survey we posted recently. I mentioned this in my last recipe, Grilled Hawaiian Bagel Paninis, but I was surprise that many of you who took the survey said they are feeding less than four people when they cook. Because this recipe is easy to break down into individual servings I have provided the ingredient measurements for one serving down at the bottom of this post. I hope this helps some of you who are looking for this. (If you haven’t taken the survey, but would still like to, you can do that here.)

Here is what you need to make 4 Monte Cristo sandwiches:

Ingredients for monte cristo sandwiches

8 slices of light bread
4 teaspoons light mayonnaise
1 teaspoon mustard
4 egg whites
1/2 cup fat-free milk
4 ounces (about 8 slices) thin sliced ham
4 ounces (about 8 slices) thin sliced turkey
4 slices thin sliced Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons raspberry preserves
2 teaspoons powdered sugar
Cooking spray

Here is what you do:

Whisk together egg whites and milk.

whisk together egg white and milk

Spread 1 teaspoon mayonnaise and 1/4 teaspoon of mustard one side of 4 slices of bread.

spread mayo and mustard on bread

Assemble the rest of the sandwiches. Each sandwich gets 2 slices of bread, 1 slice Swiss cheese, 1 ounce (about 2 slices) of ham and 1 ounce sliced turkey.

meat and swiss cheese on bread
Dip the entire sandwich in the egg mixture. (just like you would french toast)

dunk sandwich in egg white and milk

Cook sandwiches on a skillet coated with cooking spray, over medium heat, about 4 minutes or until browned. Flip sandwiches and cook an additional 4 minutes, or until both sides are browned.

Sprinkle each sandwich with 1/2 teaspoon powdered sugar and serve with 1/2 tablespoon raspberry jam to dip your sandwich in.

Makes 4 sandwiches.
One sandwich is 7 Green, 7 Blue, and 7 Purple points.

If you are making just one sandwich, you can use these ingredient measurements:

2 slices light bread,
1 slice of thin-sliced Swiss cheese
1 ounce (about 2 slices) of ham
1 ounce (about 2 slices) sliced turkey
1 teaspoon light mayonnaise
1/4 teaspoon mustard
2 tablespoons milk
1 egg white
1/2 tablespoons raspberry preserves
1/2 teaspoons powdered sugar

This looks delicious and I think I might make it for a birthday lunch coming up. I like your comment about using “regular stuff” preserves. What’s 1 sp when considering your overall health?

    5 stars
All I can say is WOW ! I never thought we could enjoy this without maybe being like 14 points. 8 points works for me. The sugar free stuff has a odd texture.
