11 uses for Onion that you didn’t know about

11 Uses for onions you didn't know about! Practical and fun ways to use an onion.

One of our most viewed posts on this site is the post about chopping and freezing your onions for later. When bags of onions are on a great sale it is efficient and frugal to buy a bag and slice and dice the onions all at one time. Then you can store them in the freezer and pull some out whenever a recipe calls for sliced or diced onions.

Did you know, though, that there are other fun and very practical ways to use an onion that has nothing to do with cooking?  Here are some of the other special things you can do with onions that you may have never thought of:

Take what these ladies are doing, for instance! I know you never thought to do that with your onion! 🙂
Creative points go to Rachel K Gillies for this one.

Okay, okay, for real, here are a few things you can make with an onion…

1. NATURAL DYES

There are several different foods that can be used to dye eggs and the onion is one of them. You can dye natural cloth or eggs with onions. Visit here to learn how to make marbled Easter eggs using onion peels.

2. MOSQUITO REPELLANT

The gases emitted by the onion, when sliced, have strong odors and are known irritants that mosquitoes do not like. Keep a sliced onion plant on your windowsill, or eat a lot of onions, to keep these bloodsuckers away.

3. SOOTHE ATHLETE’S FOOT

Onions are known for their medicinal properties. Having them around may keep you safe from many skin conditions, one of them being athlete’s foot. Rub a small amount of the onion juice onto the affected area. Your foot will stink for a little bit, but will heal faster.

4. FAINT PREVENTER

Skip the fainting salts, and give fainting onions a try. If someone feels faint chop up and onion and put it under their nose. They should feel better in no time!

5. BRASS POLISHER

If you have dirty old brass, boil some onions in a couple inches of water for a couple of hours. Use this water to polish the brass.

6. WART REMOVER

There are many known ways to try to treat a wart. One of the ways is to mix onion slices with crushed aspirin and a little water. Apply the solution to the wart. The onion’s chemical content and the aspirin’s active ingredients will gradually soothe the wart and make it subside. Here’s a neat trick: To maximize the solution’s effect, apply some to a piece of duct tape. Stick the tape on the wart. After several hours, the lesion will be nothing more than a distant memory. 7. STING SOOTHER

If you get stung by a bee or bit by a mosquito, take an onion, cut it in half and rub it onto the sting. This should take the pain or itch away quickly.

8. RELIEVE BURNS

Burns sting and are prone to infection. Treat those inflammations by mixing onion slices with a little water. Apply the mixture to the affected areas and within a few hours, your burns will subside. Just reapply whenever necessary.

9. DEODORIZE YOUR BASEMENT

Is your basement starting to smell musty? Cut and onion in half, place it on a plate, and leave it out overnight. Once the smell of the onion is gone it will have taken the other surrounding smells away with it.

10. ONION SYRUP FOR PROBLEMS WITH THE EAR, NOSE, OR THROAT, OR FOR THE COMMON COLD.

Honey draws out the intercellular fluid of the onion, including a sulfur compound, which is antiviral and antibacterial! Instructions below:

To prepare the onion and honey syrup:
1. Chop an onion into cubes.
2. Add three full tablespoons of honey.
3. Leave the mixture overnight.
4. In the morning, filter out the onion cubes and retain the fluid.
*Ingest a full tablespoon every two hours.

11. ART

Tearjerker: Sliced onion and mint leaves were used to make this owl - Miss Yi said her 'eyes were teary'

How cool is this owl!?  Hong Yi, is an artist from Malaysia, who decided to create plate-sized pieces of art out of food and this was one of her creations. I love this. To see some of her other plate presentation you can go here. It’s really very impressive what she has done!

Plus, do you know the easiest way to cut and freeze onions?!

Do you have a bag of onions you don’t want to go bad? Maybe you should consider chopping them and freezing them so they are ready when you need them in a recipe! Check out our post that shares how to cut and freeze onions easily.
