Molasses Glazed Ham Steak

March 9, 2017 by Alisha Hughes

This is an incredibly easy dinner to make on a night when you just don’t have a lot of time and aren’t up for a lot of chopping and prepping. This sweet glaze makes this ham taste off-the-charts good. I used our grill pan but you could just as easily take this to your grill outside. This recipe was inspired by a recipe from an old Weight Watcher cookbook called, Weight Watchers Cook it Quick.

What’s one serving of ham?

When I originally planned out how I would make this ham I imagined that one serving would be 6 ounces of ham. I looked at the 6 ounces of ham in the store and I thought, “Oh! I could eat that whole thing right here, right now” and I grabbed six of them! (I may have been just a tad overzealous.)

You know when you go into a restaurant hungry and you’re like, “I’m STARVING! I could eat a whole cow right now! And, in that moment, you think you need a HUGE dinner to fill you up so you order the biggest combo meal on the menu. Of course, a few bites in you start to realize, “Woah momma! I do NOT need to eat this much food”. Well, that was me with this ham.

I literally bought 6 (6 ounce) ham steaks and thought my family could eat them all, as if all five of us (my 7 year old included) would eat more than one whole 6 ounce ham steak each. I have no idea what I was thinking. I just wanted ham! And lots of it! So, we start eating and a few bites in it hits me, “Nope! I can’t eat this whole thing.” … and everyone else felt exactly the same way.

So, that’s how I learned what one serving of ham was. 🙂

After all of this I decided to actually google what one serving of ham is. At least half of you reading this right now probably already know this but one serving of ham is 3 ounces… which is exactly how much I actually wanted to eat! How often does that happen, that the size of one serving also just happens to be exactly how much you want to eat?! Never, right? Well, on this glorious day it happened.

So, how much ham will you eat?

Okay, so why am I telling you all of this? I always like to share what worked for me, but you should always do what works for you. If you aren’t eating much with your ham steak you might actually want to eat 6 ounces (which is 8 smart points), but if you are also loading up on veggies it’s probably safe to say that 3 ounces will be enough. That’s my two cents, for what it is worth. I should also mentioned that we ate ours with a side of fried rice, so that bulked things up too.

What do you do with all that extra ham?

By the way, can you guess what we did with that extra ham steak that I didn’t get around to cooking? YUP! That’s right! Green Eggs and Ham on Dr. Seuss’ birthday. So, how about that?  It all worked out perfectly in the end. 🙂 If you find yourself in a similar situation to me and you have extra ham at the end of the night, just eat it for breakfast the next morning with scrambled eggs. You’ll love it!

Okay, now onto this dinner! All this talk of ham is making me hungry!

Here is what you need:

3 Tbsp. molasses
2 Tbsp. packed brown sugar
1 tbsp. Dijon mustard
2 tsp. cider vinegar
4 (6 oz. each) extra lean ham steaks

Here is what you do:

Spray a nonstick grill pan with nonstick cooking spray and set over medium-high heat.

Combine the molasses, brown sugar, mustard, and vinegar.

Put the ham in the grill pan and cook, brushing frequently with the glaze, until lightly browned, about 4-7 minutes on each side. (more or less depending on how browned you want it)

Cut each ham steak in half and serve warm.

Makes 8 servings.
One serving is 3 oz. of grilled and glaze ham steak
One serving is 4 Green, 4 Blue, and 4 Purple points.
