Pizza Burgers

April 18, 2016 by Alisha Hughes 5 Comments

MAMA MIA, IT’S A PIZZA . . . BURGER! Pizza and burgers… Two of America’s favorites combined in one! Your kids can help you make these super easy burgers, and I am confident that they will be more than happy to help you eat them!

Have fun making these burgers your own!

What do you like to eat on your pizza? We used mushrooms in ours, but you can jazz your burgers up by mixing other veggies into the hamburger meat or topping your burger with ingredients like sliced onions and green pepper rings. By using light English muffins and turkey bacon, we were able to keep this down to 8 WW SP per burger, but you could also use light or regular hamburger buns and regular bacon. There is always sliced provolone cheese in the Hughes fridge, but a (probably obvious) substitute would be to use shredded or sliced mozzarella.

We kept ours simple. What will you put on your burger?

Slim it down even more.

We had leftovers when I made these last time. The next day I heated up the beef patty with the cheese and sauce and I left out the English muffin. It tasted great this way too. If you want you could even swap out the English muffins for lettuce, making lettuce wraps, or just eat the burgers plain. If you leave out the English muffin one burger is just 5 Weight Watcher FreeStyle Smart Points!

With the new WW FreeStyle Program, feel free to substitute the lean ground beef for 98-99% lean ground turkey and these burgers will be just 5 WW FreeStyle Points!

Here is what we used:

1/3 cup chopped fresh mushrooms (You could also add other toppings you like on your pizza, like onions, green peppers, black olives, etc.)
12 slices turkey pepperoni
2 tbsp. tomato paste
1 egg white
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/3 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
1 lb. lean ground beef (93-95% lean)
Cooking spray
5 light English muffins
5 slices reduced fat or thin sliced provolone cheese
5 tbsp. pizza sauce
cooking spray

Here is what we did:

  1. Preheat your grill or grill pan.
  2. In a food processor, combine the mushrooms (and any other vegetables), pepperoni, and tomato paste. Cover and pulse until blended. (If you do not have a food processor, you can just chop the pepperoni and mushrooms/other vegetables into small pieces and mix into the tomato paste.)

  3. Transfer to a bowl and stir in breadcrumbs, egg white, salt and pepper. Add beef and mix well with hands. Shape into five patties. Each patty will be about 1/2 cup meat mixture (more or less depending on if you added vegetables or not).

  4. Spray grill with cooking spray. Grill burgers for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until cooked to desired doneness.
  5. In the last couple of minutes of cooking the burgers, place one slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow to melt.

  6. Meanwhile, toast the English muffins.

  7. Place burger with cheese on the toasted English muffin. Top each burger with one tablespoon pizza sauce and serve warm.

Enjoy!

Makes 5 pizza burgers.

Four servings or five? The photos show five, the “servings” says five, but the instructions say shape into 4 patties. Just wondering because of points?

Wow Lara! Thank you for catching that. I updated the recipe to read “5 patties”. When I originally made this recipe I was debating whether it should be four or five and I decided to go with five and I must have forgotten to change that part on the recipe. Thanks so much! 🙂
